Brigitte Bardot by Kees van Dongen

For more than sixty years, the portrait of Brigitte Bardot, painted in 1959 by Kees van Dongen, remained hidden in the artist’s studio. It is now being presented to the public once again. This large oil on canvas (130 × 97 cm), with a yellow background characteristic of the artist’s palette, comes directly from his estate. The work is estimated at €800,000 to €1,200,000 and is among the highlights of the SELECTED 20/21 sale, organized by Artcurial on 24 October, in parallel with Art Basel Paris. On this occasion, eighteen works by Kees van Dongen from his estate will also be presented. This portrait is one of the highlights of the auction, bringing together two icons of the 20th century: Kees van Dongen, painter of Parisian high society and portraitist of some of the most renowned figures of his time, and Brigitte Bardot, who in just a few years became an emblem of modernity, female freedom, and international fame.
