The Mechanics of Crowds

Among others, we can be swept up in a wave of enthusiasm or pulled in every direction. These interactions give rise to complex phenomena that the exhibition The Mechanics of Crowds sets out to unravel.

How do researchers study the dense crowds that gather at major events? What invisible rules do we unknowingly follow as we move among others? How do large-scale shifts in public opinion emerge and spread across social media?

La Cité Miroir presents The Mechanics of Crowds, an immersive exhibition created by the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie in Paris. Through a scientific, playful and interactive approach, the exhibition invites visitors to explore collective behaviour and crowd dynamics, making these phenomena accessible to the widest possible audience.

Long associated with negative or unsettling images, the crowd remains, in our collective imagination, a strange and even threatening entity. Drawing on the latest interdisciplinary research, The Mechanics of Crowds challenges our preconceptions and offers a deeper understanding of the collective mechanisms that shape our societies.
