The only two works by Édouard Manet preserved in Belgium are located in Tournai. Gathered at the heart of a building designed by Victor Horta, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tournai, they benefit from an unprecedented presentation, conceived as a direct encounter with the artworks. As a flagship exhibition for the museum, Manet. Never Seen Manet uses these two masterpieces as a starting point for an exploration of modernity, the gaze, and our relationship with the world. More than an exhibition about Manet, it places the visitor at the heart of the experience, inviting them to become an active participant in their own looking, to rediscover what Manet’s contemporaries felt when facing his paintings: the unsettling sensation of seeing something they had never seen before.
