Exhibition - Atomium, A love story since 1958

Held at the dawn of the “Golden Sixties”, Expo 58 was the first internationalexhibition to take place after the Second World War. A celebration of thereturn to peace, of humanism and modernity, Expo 58 made a strikingimpact and has formed part of the collective memory of the Belgian nationever since.Everyone has their own recollection of the event, an anecdote, or a family photo. To commemorate its sixtieth anniversary, the Atomium andthe ADAM − Brussels Design Museum – will be celebrating this magical,glamorous event with a programme of three exhibitions collectively entitled Galaxy 58. The People of 58 forms an extension to the Atomium’s permanent exhibition.It will focus particularly on the people involved in Expo 58, using a largenumber of documents, videos, photographs, objects and costumes, most ofwhich have never before been seen. It will immerse visitors in the ambience,environment and experience of those times. An exhibition entitled Graphic 58, held at the ADAM, will explore the forms, colours and textures that defined the innovative graphic world of Expo 58. The Design Museum will also be presenting Podium 58, in collaboration withthe Museum of Costume and Lace (Fashion Museum). This exhibition will show the visitors to theExpo strolling along its alleyways dressed in their Sunday best, as the old rubbed shoulders with the new in a world undergoing dramaticchanges on the eve of the Swinging Sixties.
