Exhibition - Kartell: A Tribute to Ettore Sottsass

From 01/09/2018 - CPI : 31/08/2018

Within the framework of the programme 2017, ADAM – Brussels Design Museum will be to hosting a tribute to Ettore Sottsass, realized in collaboration with the Kartell Museo and shown during the Autumn and Winter 2017. This exhibition will be part of the Brussels Design September festival. The exhibition “Kartell. A Tribute to Ettore Sottsass” will present a comprehensive overview of the project by Ettore Sottsass work for Kartell. The exhibition will be mainly focused on the collection of objects he designed for Kartell in 2004. In 2014 Kartell paid tribute to the master of design Ettore Sottsass with a collection of original projects he designed 10 years earlier but that had never been created. With six vases, two stools and a lamp, the collection expresses a marked affinity with the aesthetics of Memphis, the famous design collective founded by Sottsass. With post-futurist volumes, the stools and vases have bright colours and express many aspects of Sottsass’ approach to design. The same colour palette is repeated in the “Daisy” hanging lamp with an unusual application of rectangular plastic shapes to a central disk. The exhibition is also enriched by references to the environment created by Sottsass on the occasion of the exhibition “Italy the New Domestic landscape” at MoMA (1972) and to the collection “Kartell goes Sottsass. A Tribute to Memphis”: chairs by Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola and Piero Lissoni covered with fabrics designed by Michele de Lucchi, Nathalie du Pasquier, and Ettore Sottsass himself and created in collaboration with Memphis.
